A Nigerian who serves as a Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom, Kate Osamor, has called for a peaceful resolution of the agitation for Biafra in Nigeria.
In a couple of tweets late Sunday Night, Kate noted that if the agitation is left to fester, it would lead to a tribal civil war which will only cause more instability.
Biafra, was a secessionist state in eastern Nigeria that existed from 30 May 1967 to January 1970. The inhabitants were mostly the Igbo people who led the secession due to economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions among the various peoples of Nigeria. The secession of the Biafran region was the primary cause of the Nigerian Civil War which left the number of casualties at no fewer than 2 million.
Recently however, a section of Nigerians, mainly Igbos, have again come together to form a group which they call Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). They have renewed the agitation  to secede from Nigeria to become a sovereign state but have met fierce resistance from the Nigerian government.
The leader of the group, Nnamdi Kanu has been in detention and is being tried for charges bordering on treasonable felony.
Others standing trial with Kanu are the National Coordinator of IPOB member, Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi.
They are being tried for treasonable felony, managing an unlawful society, publication of defamatory matter, illegal possession of firearms and improper importation of goods.
This has further fuelled protests among the agitators who feel their leaders are being treated unfairly.
